Lexington Car Accident Statistics

Lexington and Fayette County experienced an increase in motor vehicle accidents last year, according to state statistics and recent news reports.

The Lexington Herald-Leader says 52 people died in traffic crashes in Fayette County in 2023, including 20 pedestrians. That’s the most deaths from crashes in a year since at least 2011.

The numbers in 2023 represent a single year’s spike in Lexington area auto fatalities. A WKYT report quotes the following from Kentucky State Police:

  • 2020: 26 crashes – 27 deaths
  • 2021: 36 crashes – 42 deaths
  • 2022: 35 crashes – 38 deaths
  • 2023: 52 crashes – 52 deaths

“Last year was a very, very bad year for fatal crashes,” Lori Weaver-Hawkins of the American Auto Association told WKYT. “There are some obvious driving behaviors that look like we’re not seeing quite as much this year, maybe not quite as many fatal crashes due to distracted and inattentive driving as we saw a year ago.”

Causes of Car Accidents in Lexington

Why do car accidents happen in Kentucky? According to the KY State Police, the most prevalent factor contributing to collisions in the state is inattention. Drivers who aren’t focused on the road ahead and changes in traffic conditions cause many preventable accidents.

Some 41,578 collisions, or approximately one of every five through mid-October 2024 (20.76%), were due to inattention, Kentucky State Police say. Additional human factors cited are:

  • Misjudge Clearance: 13,539
  • Not Under Proper Control: 12,468
  • Failed To Yield Right of Way: 11,304
  • Following Too Close: 5,845
  • Failed to Keep Proper Lane: 5,190
  • Other: 4,113
  • Distraction: 3,893
  • Disregard Traffic Control: 3,146

The KSP database also shows that in more than two-thirds of traffic accidents, the weather was clear. It reports cloudy conditions for 18 percent of collisions and rain for 10.79%. Conditions of snow, fog, or fog with rain were reported for less than 1% of collisions.

The Aftermath of a Car Accident in Lexington

A car accident can have a serious impact on your life, your health, and your family. At Morgan, Collins, Yeast & Salyer, our Lexington personal injury attorneys help car accident victims coping with serious injuries get their lives back in order.

When someone else’s negligence is responsible for the car accident that has injured you, a KY personal injury lawyer can help you pursue financial compensation for your losses. This includes payment for:

  • Medical bills
  • Lost wages and work time
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of companionship for the partner of the injured person.

After some car accidents, we find that our clients are eligible for workers’ compensation benefits or qualify for Social Security Disability benefits. We fight on all fronts to demand the fair compensation you need.

Medical bills are typically the biggest expense after being injured in a car crash. Fortunately, these costs can be documented by gathering medical records, bills, and receipts. Medical records and bills provide supporting evidence if you file a personal injury claim. They help your personal injury lawyer tell the story of your injuries and recovery, which is the basis of compensation for pain and suffering.

You should seek medical attention as soon as possible after a car accident. This ensures you get the medical help you need and establishes a record of your injuries. If you or someone else has been seriously injured in an accident, phone 911 to summon police and an ambulance. If you don’t need an ambulance, see a doctor within 24 hours of a car accident.
